Jimmy John's opens downtown

Sandwich shop is where Higher Grounds used to be

On Tuesday a new Jimmy John's sandwich shop opened at the corner of Wayne and Calhoun streets downtown, where Higher Grounds used to be.

The franchise is known for its subs and club sandwiches. There are three other Jimmy John's stores in Fort Wayne.

Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday-Saturday. The address is 101 W. Wayne St. and the phone number is 420-1533. For a nominal fee the shop will deliver, even for an order of just one sandwich, in the downtown area by car or bike (although maybe not by bike in this weather).

Marika Hamilton-Meeks and Brian Meeks expanded their Jimmy John's franchise with this store. Hamilton-Meeks opened the first Jimmy John's franchise in Fort Wayne in October 2006. "We love Jimmy John's and eat it almost every day," she said in a news release. "It is a privilege to produce a product that you truly believe in and enjoy. We love the food, we love being a part of the community, mentoring the young people that work for us, and love the honesty and authenticity of the brand."

Meeks, who was born and raised in Fort Wayne, has 25 years of commercial real estate development experience, including as project manager for the Wells Fargo building across the street from the newest Jimmy John's.

The Meeks decided to invest downtown after watching the growth and momentum there, according to the release.

In addition to in-house dining and delivery Jimmy John's offers catering, lunch boxes and platters.
