A Fort Wayne financial adviser allegedly shot another man in the chest outside a near north-side bar Saturday after the two got into a fight over the victim’s girlfriend.
Michael J. Collier, 43, of the 900 block of Charlotte Avenue, is accused of shooting James A. Heinze in the chest with a .38-caliber semi-automatic pistol outside the State Bar & Grill, 1210 E. State Blvd., after the two got into multiple altercations both inside and outside the bar, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The bar closed early because several arguments erupted inside the bar and the bartender told police he wanted to prevent physical fights.
Collier and Heinze, 52, were arguing because Collier was staring at Heinze’s girlfriend, the affidavit said.
Witnesses told police that Collier left the bar after the argument and was walking to his truck when Heinze approached him.
The bartender was ushering people out of the bar when he saw Collier and Heinze fighting, court documents said.
Another witness broke up the fight and pushed Heinze away when he saw Collier pull out a gun and allegedly fire two shots toward Heinze, police said.
One of those shots injured Collier’s left pinkie finger, the affidavit said, and Collier was taken to Parkview Hospital. It is unclear which shot wounded Collier.
At the hospital, an officer overheard Collier say, “I’m glad I shot that (expletive),” and added that he thought the shooting was in self-defense, court records said.
Collier listed PFS Investments as his employer when he was booked into the Allen County Jail early Saturday. PFS operates as Primerica Financial Services and has an office on Stellhorn Road near East State Boulevard, about 2 miles from the bar.
Primerica representatives are independent contractors, not employees of Primerica or any of its affiliates, according to Primerica’s website.
Collier is being held without bail and will be in court Thursday.
