Victims in fatal crash with police car are ID’d

FORT WAYNE – A Fort Wayne man who died after a crash Monday with an Allen County Sheriff’s Department vehicle has been identified, along with a child and woman who were injured.

The sheriff’s department said Tuesday that van driver Elmo Portee, 27, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died.

An 8-year-old girl in the van, Rayshawti Williams, was in serious condition and Rashanta Williams, 27, had minor injuries, according to a statement from the sheriff’s department.

It said sheriff’s officer Mark Sickafoose was going east on Dupont Road about 10:10 a.m. Monday, with the police car’s lights and sirens activated, when it collided with the van going north on Diebold Road.

Sickafoose sustained minor injuries, the statement said. The sheriff’s department identified him as the driver Monday.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy Tuesday morning and ruled that Portee’s death was an accident, caused by blunt force trauma. It said he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
