New DNA evidence leads to rape charge

With the help of recently obtained DNA evidence, Steuben County detectives have arrested a man charged with raping a 16-year-old girl in 2010.

The suspect, Jamie Aranda, 50, of Hudson, was arrested at his work about 4:10 p.m. Friday, according to a statement from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl was raped Dec. 30, 2010, in Hudson, and detectives had been working the case since then, the sheriff’s office said.

In an email, Detective Chris Emerick said the results of an initial DNA test were available in the late spring of 2011.

A prosecutor reviewed the case at that point and decided not to file charges, Emerick said.

However, the results of another type of DNA test were recently received from the Indiana State Police lab, and a prosecutor filed charges last week, Emerick said.

Aranda was being held without bail Sunday on a rape charge. His initial court hearing is set for today.
