Officer Scott Tegtmeyer said multiple reports of shots fired sent police officers to the 4600 block of Spatz Avenue, near East Sherwood Terrace and Lafayette Street, about 10:45 p.m.
Police found a tan Nissan with three people inside. A man in the driver’s seat had been shot, and he was declared dead at the scene, Tegtmeyer said.
The second shooting victim, a woman in the back seat, was taken to a hospital in fair condition. A man in the front passenger seat of the car was not injured, Tegtmeyer said.
Tegtmeyer said police believe the shots came from outside the Nissan, but where they originated was not clear. No weapons were found in the Nissan, he said.
“All we know at this time is that this tan Nissan was coming down the street and gunfire erupted,” he said, adding that people in the area reported hearing anywhere from “several” to up to 50 gunshots.
As investigators documented the scene and searched for evidence, the Nissan remained parked on the narrow avenue in the middle of the block. Next to the Nissan was another car with its door open toward the Nissan. That other car’s role in the shootings was unclear, Tegtmeyer said.
Police did not release any information on suspects. No arrests had been made.
The identities of the victims were not released.
