A driver who fell asleep at the wheel struck and killed a pedestrian Sunday morning, Fort Wayne police said.
Officer Scott Tegtmeyer, a police spokesman, said the pedestrian was walking in the grass along Hessen Cassel Road when he was hit. There is no curb or sidewalk along that stretch of road, only a small gravel shoulder, Tegtmeyer said.
The names of the pedestrian and the driver, a Fort Wayne man, were not released.
Police were called about 8:40 a.m. Sunday to the 6200 block of Hessen Cassel Road on the city’s south side near Stardale Drive. Officers found the pedestrian unresponsive in the grass west of the road. Medics declared him dead at the scene, police said.
Investigators determined he was walking on the west side of the road in an unknown direction when he was hit by the pickup truck, a gray Chevrolet.
The truck was heading north on Hessen Cassel Road when the driver fell asleep and went off the road, police said.
There have been no arrests in the case, which remains under investigation.
