Prompted by Penn State case, IU adopts new child safety policy

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana University has implemented a new policy for protecting children that was developed after the attention given to the Penn State child abuse case.

The new IU policy covers those younger than 18 who are on campus for activities and also governs programs on campus run by outside organizations.

University spokesman Mark Land tells The Herald-Times that IU personnel have already been following many of the policy's practices, but that it made sense to put it all in writing after the Penn State case.

The new policy calls for those working with children to have undergone criminal background and sex offender registry checks at least once every three years. It also requires programs involving children to have safety plans covering areas as transportation, weather emergencies and supervision.
