ANGOLA - Notre Dame hasn't been relevant in the national picture on the football field for nearly two decades, but the lure of the Fighting Irish still resonates in the world of recruiting.

The Fighting Irish received a verbal commitment from Bishop Luers senior standout Jaylon Smith on Saturday following his participation at a football camp at Trine University.

"It feels good to get (the decision) out of the way so that I can enjoy my senior year," Smith said.

Smith has been a a varsity player for the Knights for each of their three consecutive IHSAA Class 2A State Championships. He plays both offense and defense, but is expected to contribute quickly at linebacker with Notre Dame.

"I really don't have any fear in any athlete," Smith said. "I feel like I could play where ever I chose. (Notre Dame) has three starting linebackers leaving my incoming year, so it will be a great opportunity."

The 2011 News-Sentinel Player of the Year was offered scholarships from 24 of the top programs in the country.

Offensively, he rushed for 1,319 yards and scored 25 touchdowns as a running back. On the defensive side of the ball, Smith, who is rated as the number four player int he country by one national scouting service, made 52 tackles, including 18 for a loss.
