The NCAA recognized 47 sports programs at 10 universities in Indiana for the teams’ performance in the classroom.
The NCAA named its academic overachievers Thursday. The award recognizes teams with perfect scores of 1,000 on the Academic Progress Rate measures and those that finish among the top 10 percent in their sport’s APR. This year’s data cover the four-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11.
Notre Dame led state institutions with 17 teams earning overachiever status, and Butler was second in the state with 11.
The Irish teams that earned the award were baseball, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s hockey, men’s lacrosse, men’s swimming, men’s tennis, men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, softball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s swimming, women’s indoor track and women’s outdoor track.
The Bulldogs’ teams that earned the award were men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s indoor track, men’s outdoor track, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s tennis, women’s indoor track and women’s outdoor track.
Valparaiso was third on the list in the state with six teams being recognized. Valpo teams that earned the award were softball, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s indoor track and women’s outdoor track.
Indiana University and Evansville each had three teams honored.
Hoosiers teams that earned the award were baseball, men’s golf and women’s tennis. Purple Aces teams that were honored were women’s basketball, women’s cross country and women’s golf.
IPFW teams recognized as overachievers were men’s golf and women’s volleyball.
Purdue teams to earn the award were men’s basketball and women’s volleyball.
Indiana State’s men’s cross country team, IUPUI’s men’s tennis and Ball State’s women’s cross country team were also recognized as academic overachievers.
