FORT WAYNE — Fort Wayne catcher Austin Hedges had two hits and three RBI as the Eastern Division crushed the Western Division 18-2 in the Midwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva, Ill.
Hedges went 2 for 3 with one run scored. Fort Wayne’s Adys Portillo was the starting pitcher. He had a scoreless first to pick up the victory.
Fort Wayne shortstop Jace Peterson and pitcher Frank Garces also participated in the event. Peterson went 1 for 2 with a double and one run scored. Garces struck out one in two-thirds of an inning.
The Eastern Division scored five runs in the first inning and eight more in the second.
The East hit two homers in the first. South Bend’s Gerson Montilla hit a solo homer. O’Koyea Dickson of the Great Lakes Loons hit a two-run home run to make it 3-0. Dickson had two hits and was the game’s MVP. Hedges hit a two-run double later in the inning.
Steven Moya of West Michigan had a three-run triple in the second inning.
He scored on a single to left by Hedges. Hedges later scored on a two-run home run by Bowling Green’s Tyler Goeddel.
Garces struck out the final batter he faced in the eighth inning. Peterson doubled leading off the ninth. He later scored, part of a four-run inning. The East had 20 hits. Dayton’s Ryan Wright, a Homestead graduate, went 1 for 3 with one RBI for the Eastern Division.
Note: Pitcher Chris Haney was transferred from Fort Wayne to short-season A Eugene on Tuesday. Haney went 0-2 with a 15.75 ERA. In four innings of work, he gave up seven earned runs, struck out eight and walked four.
