The ’stache came back to town.

John Gregg and his mustache, a symbol on many campaign marketing materials, made another appearance in Fort Wayne, returning just days after attending the Democratic convention. This time, it was to field questions, take comments and discuss education. Educators and parents met Wednesday afternoon with Gregg at 816 Pint & Slice downtown.

Gregg will face off with Republican Mike Pence for the governor’s seat in November’s general election.

About 25 people filled the upstairs room and enjoyed pizza while listening to Gregg, who himself is a product of public education and was the first in his family to attend college.

He didn’t outline any specific goals, but said he is a proponent of local control and not working "from the top down." He said although the governor sets the education agenda, it’s unlikely he would be able to reverse any legislative education reforms like performance-based pay for teachers and fewer bargaining rights for teachers unions passed in the previous session because of the Republican-controlled House and Senate.

Gregg did say that he works well with both Republicans and Democrats and would put more of an emphasis on input from those working in the trenches: teachers, principals and superintendents.
