Cancer Care Award nominees sought

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Parkview Cancer Care Award. The annual award honors individuals or groups of people who dedicate their energies to improving life for people with cancer through acts of kindness or creativity, awareness events and initiatives, or the founding of not-for-profit organizations to assist cancer patients across northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio.

Cancer support group meetings

Lutheran Cancer Resource Center, 7910 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite 109, 435-7584, will hold the following support groups in July: 6 p.m. July 3, brain tumor; 1 p.m. July 10 and 24, smoke buster's; 4 p.m. July 10, ovarian/gyn; 5:30 p.m. July 17, breast cancer; 4 p.m. July 18, head and neck; 4 p.m. July 19, lymphoma/leukemia/multiple myeloma; 4 p.m. July 23, survivorship; and 4 p.m. July 26 recurrent metastatic.

Lecture offered

Kachmann Mind Body Institute Lecture will be 7-8 p.m. today at the Kachmann Auditorium located in Lutheran Hospital, 7900 W. Jefferson Blvd. Speaker will be Dr. Rudy Kachmann. Topic will be “Getting a Doctor's Second Opinion.” The lecture is free and open to the public.

Victims support available

The REACT Program of the Women's Bureau will offer a support group for survivors of sexual assault at 5 p.m. Tuesdays in July. The event is free.

Global Picnic for brain-injury survivors

Brain Injury Support Group will participate in the Brain Injury Global Picnic at noon-3 p.m. Saturday at Jorgensen YMCA, 10313 Aboite Center Road. The Global Picnic will be hosted throughout the world by survivors, families and advocates as a way to celebrate survival from Traumatic Brain Injury and to learn more about this disability.

Drinks and activities will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring their lunch and a blanket. The Parkview Foundation will offer 10 bicycle helmets as prizes. The event is free.

Alzheimer’s care training

Alzheimer's CARE training workshop will begin at 7 p.m. July 2 at the Home Instead Senior Care offices, 2789-B Maplecrest Road.

All-American Blood Drive will be July 2-17. Donors will receive a free T-shirt.

The 2012 All-American Blood Drive sponsored by radio station Star, 88.3-FM, will be held at 9 a.m.-7 p.m. July 2-3; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. July 5 and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 6 and 7 at Fort Wayne Donor Center, 1212 E. California Road (across from the Coliseum); and noon-6 p.m. July 2 and 3 and 6 a.m.-noon July 5-7 at Lutheran Hospital Donor Center, 7900 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite 107 (in the South Lobby of Lutheran Hospital near the gift shop).

Yoga studio open house

Simply Yoga will have an open house at 5-8 p.m. July 13 at 9175 Lima Road in White Swan Plaza. Free yoga classes will be offered on Saturday and Sunday mornings of the opening weekend. Regularly scheduled classes begin July 16.
