Fireworks? What is the city thinking?

What are city officials thinking? Fort Wayne has not had even an inch of rain for several weeks. We have a moderate drought and they have banned open fires, but they are going to continue the fireworks for July 4 and are not going to ban the sale of them to the public.

Fireworks are potentially very dangerous if not handled properly and many people do not. The city has two choices. Which one takes precedence? People having a good time, causing neighborhood disturbances for several days and potentially setting off fires? Or being prudent and banning using fireworks this year?

The answer is obvious. Make the safe and responsible choice to disallow this activity until a later time when it will not be a hazard to the people of Fort Wayne. Are we that desperate for fun that we will do it at the expense of others and cause potential harm?

Beware of barbecued bugs on this day

What possible reason could anyone have to barbecue soy dogs and veggie burgers on July 4, instead of animal body parts? Would any of these work?

– Not worrying about nasty E. coli and Salmonella bugs, if temperature is too low

– Not worrying about deadly carcinogens, if temperature is too high

– Focusing on traffic and fireworks safety, rather than food safety

– Giving your eyes a break from reading government warning labels

– Giving your body a holiday from saturated fat, cholesterol, and hormones

– Not sweating the animal cruelty and environmental devastation guilt trips

– Sharing a holiday with your strange, but lovable veggie friends

– Celebrating a day of independence from the meat industry.

How nice

I enjoy reading about people in restaurants who go to pay their bill and find it was already paid. I always thought “how nice” but never expected it to happen to me.

Then on June 21 about 5:30 p.m. in the KFC parking lot in Columbia City, a young man and his family came out. He saw me and asked if I would be eating alone. When I said “yes,” he handed me money and said to use it to buy my meal. What a wonderful surprise and such a kind thing to do. I hope he sees this letter. It proves there are nice people here.
