Missing this year from the IPFW fireworks display was the pre-show.
No, not a regularly scheduled event, but the time spent by family and friends lighting small fireworks or sparklers as they wait for the display. Instead this year glow sticks were everywhere and some kids even had bright light-up toys, like Bryson Stephens, 5, of Columbia City.
“We have made no promises as to when we will do our own fireworks,” Destiny Stephens, Bryson's mother. They were stretched out on a blanket waiting for the big show as Bryson twirled his battery powered sparkler substitute.
Up on the rooftop of parking garage 1, at the IPFW party, glow sticks dotted the rooftop wrapped around necks and wrists, or just being waved around. Paul Masek, father of two small children said his kids were young enough they didn't really know what they were missing out on, and the glow sticks seemed to be making them happy.
Unlike some years there was plenty of parking, as the crowd appeared to be smaller, possibly due to the heat.
