SOUTH BEND — The South Bend School Board has voted to lay off 45 teachers and also cut the jobs of nearly 50 classroom aides or support staffers.
District officials say they are forced to make many of the cuts because of changes in a federal grant program as the district also tries to cut $12 million from its budget.
The board voted 6-1 Wednesday to approve the cuts. Board member William Sniadecki tells the South Bend Tribune he voted against the proposal because he believes too many instructional positions have been eliminated while the administrative staff has grown.
Board president Roger Parent tells WNDU-TV that he believes the job cuts are manageable as the district has fewer students and is going to close some schools.
