Indiana attorney general's office warns about utility scam

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana attorney general's office is warning homeowners about a scam that says a new federal program will pay their utility bills in exchange for personal information.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller says people have called his office saying they were told credits would be provided on their bills if they release their Social Security Numbers or bank account information. The victims are given fraudulent bank information to use when paying their bills online.

Zoeller says legitimate businesses will not make unsolicited calls, texts or email messages asking for Social Security numbers or bank account numbers. People who believe they may be a victim can file a consumer complaint with the attorney general's office.
