Kitties, pooches, birdies and other assorted pets strutted their stuff in front of the camera Sunday and Monday for Picture Your Pet. Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control's Peggy Bender says the event is an effort to “give people a keepsake” of their pet while raising support for her agency.

Every pet and its owner who attended received a 5x7 picture of their pet for $15. Pet owners could also purchase 8x10s, bag tags, key tags and magnets with the photos on them.

The Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival event has been snapping photos of pets and their owners for 25 years. “It's fun to see the same families come back year after year,” Bender says. “You get to see people grow up with their pets.” She says owners have told her that they especially appreciate having the pictures after their pets have passed away.

The $1,200 that Animal Care expected to raise with the event will fund animal safety education and outreach programs.

Bender said 32 percent of children in Fort Wayne 17 years of age and younger are bitten by a pet. That is substantially less than the 60 percent national average. Bender says that Animal Care would like to keep this statistic low through pet safety awareness.
