Four Fort Wayne pitchers combined to limit the Cedar Rapids Kernels to three hits on Wednesday, as the TinCaps won the opener of the three game series, 6-0.
Fort Wayne scored four times in the first four innings, and did not allow the Kernels to put a runner in scoring position the entire night.
Chris Fetter started the ballgame for Fort Wayne (14-11 second half, 46-50), which was the Carmel native's first game in a TinCaps uniform since starting game two of 2009 Midwest League Championship series.
The 26-year-old right-hander worked three innings, faced 10 batters and allowed one hit.
During Fetter's time on the hill, the TinCaps' bats were active.
Yeison Asencio tripled home Mike Gallic, which was followed by Duanel Jones driving home Asencio with a single to put Fort Wayne on top 2-0 after the first inning.
In the third inning, Tyler Stubblefield led off with a double and scored on an Asencio sacrifice fly.
Cedar Rapids (8-17, 40-56) starter Michael Johnson (4-5) allowed another Fort Wayne run in the fourth, giving up an RBI single to Jace Peterson.
Johnson surrendered 10 hits, walked one and struck out two.
James Needy (4-1) earned the win, providing three innings of two-hit relief. Johnny Barbato worked the sixth and seventh, and James Jones the ninth to complete the shutout. It marked the third time this half that Fort Wayne has shut out an opponent.
Two more Fort Wayne runs came across in the ninth, with Stubblefield and Gallic sending runners across the plate.
