The remains of Berne native Spc. Nicholas Andrew Taylor Jr., who was killed Monday with another Indiana Guardsman in Afghanistan, have been returned to the United States.

Taylor, 20, and Spc. Sergio Eduardo Perez of Crown Pointe were members of the 713th Engineer Company, headquartered in Valparaiso, and were assigned to clear military supply and combat routes, according to a news release.

They were killed Monday when his vehicle was struck by enemy rocket-propelled grenades in Kandahar Province during a mounted route clearance patrol.

Taylor, a 2010 Adams Central High School graduate, is the son of Berne Police Chief Timothy Ray and Stephania Dawn Taylor.

Details of his funeral have not yet been released.
