Driver dead in Williams County crash

A driver died Sunday morning after crashing into a power pole along U.S. 20 in Williams County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The driver, a 49-year-old Toledo man, was going east in a Ford Windstar minivan on U.S. 20, about two miles east of Pioneer, shortly before 9 a.m.

The vehicle went off the south side of the road, came back into the eastbound lane and swerved, going off the south side of the road again. That’s when the left side of the van hit a power pole, the patrol said.

First responders cut the roof off the minivan to reach the driver. He was not wearing a seat belt and had been partially ejected. He died at the scene, the patrol said.

The impact split the pole and caused heavy damage to the minivan, mainly to its left side.

The patrol did not release the driver’s name.
