GARY — Authorities say two people have died and five people, including a firefighter, were injured in a Gary apartment fire.
Gary Fire Battalion Chief Dino Travlino tells The Times of Munster firefighters responded to the scene about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and saw heavy smoke coming from a two-story brick apartment building.
Travlino says four people trapped on the second floor were rescued from a front apartment and taken to area hospitals. Two others were pulled from a rear apartment and were pronounced dead at the scene.
A Gary firefighter was injured when he fell through a floor of the building. Travlino says the firefighter's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
