Waterloo driver killed

A Waterloo man was killed and another injured Friday afternoon in a collision between a Jeep and a semitractor trailer.

Derek M. Garman, 20, had massive head trauma and died from the collision, which occurred at 12:51 p.m. Friday at U.S. 6 east of County Road 24, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department. Garman was westbound on U.S. 6 in a 2000 Cherokee Jeep when the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane, striking the rear tandem of the semi trailer in that lane, according to a news release.

Garman’s passenger, Richard M. Phillips, 18, had possible broken ribs from the crash. The semi driver was not injured.

Road work planned

The following road work is planned:

*Grotrian Road will be closed between Barkley and South County Line roads 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Mondayfor replacement of a crossover pipe.

*Randallia Drive will be closed to all traffic just north of Lake Avenue Monday-Wednesday.

The closure will allow the contractor, Hipskind Concrete, to complete storm sewer installations and replace the concrete pavement in this area.

Drivers are encouraged to use State Boulevard, Anthony Boulevard and Lake Avenue to get around the area.

*A brief traffic signal outage will take place at the Indiana 1 (Dupont Road) and Clinton Street/Tonkel Road intersection at 6 a.m. Monday. Indiana Michigan Power will be conducting a power transfer between circuits at that time. The outage is expected to last 5-10 minutes.

Additional city and county intersections will also be affected by this power transfer, including, but not limited to, areas north of Rothman Road and east of Tonkel. Drivers should treat any intersection without power as a four-way stop during the signal outage period.
