Truck rig rams van delivering blood

2 hurt, none badly; no damage to cargo

No one was seriously hurt in a five-vehicle crash on the city’s north side Monday afternoon that involved a van carrying donated blood from the American Red Cross.

Fort Wayne police were called to the intersection of Coliseum Boulevard and Lake Avenue just before 11:30 a.m.

The crash occurred when a truck rig rear-ended a white cargo van that was stopped at a light at the intersection, according to police investigators.

The collision caused a chain reaction, with a total of five vehicles being hit. Two people reported injuries, but they did not appear to be critical, according to police.

The van was carrying blood that had previously been sent to Cleveland for processing and was on its way back to be supplied to area hospitals, according to Red Cross spokeswoman Tracy Duncan.

None of the valuable cargo was damaged, Duncan said.

“It was packed properly and is still usable, so we’ll be getting it out to our local hospital customers,” Duncan said.

The crash did clog Coliseum Boulevard for over an hour and the driver of the truck rig was cited for a traffic violation, according to police.
