Habitat for Humanity is planning an interfaith building project that will pool resources from 11 congregations in Fort Wayne. Habitat is a nonprofit that builds homes for people in need. Families are given an interest-free loan and must do 300 hours of volunteer work with the agency.
Colleen Carpenter of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fort Wayne said Habitat is recruiting help from “beyond the traditional Christian churches” for this effort. Jewish, Muslim and Orthodox congregations are represented. Carpenter said the build is an attempt to form relationships among local religious groups.
But Habitat's Kory Stucky said the project is still in its planning stages. Only half the $60,000 needed has been raised. “We can't begin building the house without the money,” he said.
He believes the build will be scheduled in 2013.
