FORT WAYNE — Bishop Dwenger junior quarterback Mike Fiacable tore the ACL in his left knee in practice Friday and will miss significant time.

“I was running, then got hit and fell forward and then I tried getting up and when I got up, it cracked twice,” he wrote in a text message. “I just fell back down. I was taken for an MRI.”

Last season, Fiacable threw for 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Saints. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Fiacable was also part of AWP’s national qualifying 7-on-7 team last summer.

“I’m done for a while, and I have to get surgery sometime soon,” he wrote. “I’m not sure when (I am coming back), but I’m pretty sure I’m out for basketball season too.”

After winning five straight SAC championships, the Saints finished 7-5 last and were fourth in the conference with a 4-3 league mark. Dwenger’s 38-game winning streak in the SAC was snapped by North Side. And after reaching at least the semistate for five seasons, the Saints lost to Leo 35-14 in the sectional semifinals.

Fiacable wrote he wasn’t sure who would take his place as the Saints’ signal-caller this season.

Dwenger coach Chris Svarczkopf, who was unavailable for comment, was definitely counting on Fiacable when talking about the team in the preseason.

“What we are going to need Mike to do, with his experience, is take charge of the offense and do more than he has ever done before,” Svarczkopf said at the Northeast Indiana Football Media Day on July 20. “He is going to have to read the defense and call the right play. These young people will follow him because they appreciate work and time he has put into it.”

But unfortunately for the Saints, the team won’t get a chance to follow Fiacable’s lead – this year.

Fiacable was part of a wealth of returning quarterbacks in the SAC that included Colin Brockhouse at Northrop, C.J. Jackson at North Side, Brandon Phelps at Snider, Donovan Clark at South Side and Jaylin Thomas at Wayne.
