Fort Wayne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its Midwest League game at South Bend on Friday, but the TinCaps could not sustain that momentum and fell 3-2.
Fort Wayne was held scoreless through the final seven innings.
The TinCaps (25-15 second half, 55-55) tacked on single runs in the first and second innings against Silver Hawks starter Archie Bradley (9-5).
Mike Gallic singled home Jace Peterson in the first inning, and Peterson plated Matt Colantonio with a single of his own in the second.
South Bend (20-20, 55-55) responded with two runs in the second against Fort Wayne starter Ruben Mejia (1-5).
The right-hander made his 10th start of the season and faced a bases-loaded, one-out situation with Eric Groff at the plate. Groff deposited a pitch into the left-field corner, scoring Ryan Court and Marc Bourgeois, which tied the game at 2.
The closest Fort Wayne came to scoring for the remainder of the game was with two outs in the fourth inning, B.J. Guinn failed to bring home Colantonio, who was at second base, and Peterson at first. Guinn swung and missed at a third strike, which was dropped by catcher Bryan Henry. Henry's throw to first base was late, which allowed Guinn to reach safely, but Colantonio scampered for home and was tagged out by a diving Bradley.
The Silver Hawks scored the deciding run in the fifth against Mejia.
Matt Helm ripped a one-out double to left field and scored on a two-out single from Kerry Jenkins, giving South Bend a 3-2 advantage.
Friday's game closed the regular season series between the two clubs and the Silver Hawks claimed 13 wins in the series.
