FORT WAYNE —
Early Wednesday, workers were building an overpass at Union Chapel Road, just north of the Union Chapel exit. They were installing a large beam when rigging failed, causing the beam to fall, INDOT spokeswoman Mary Foster said.
No one was injured, but the accident prompted a 5 1/2 -hour closure of the northbound lanes, authorities said.
The falling beam landed on another beam that was already installed. That second beam was damaged and will be removed, Foster said.
Because of the setback, two additional nights of intermittent, 20-minute closures of the northbound lanes were set for 9 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. today and 9 tonight to 5 a.m. Friday.
The Allen County Sheriff’s Department will assist with the stoppages, and barrels and arrow boards will direct drivers to the left lane before each stoppage starts. Drivers are encouraged to take different routes or plan with the delays in mind.
The interchange remains on schedule to open by late fall, with the exception of the on-ramp to northbound I-69 from Union Chapel Road. The entire project is expected to be finished by summer 2013.
