Sex offender held in area rape case

A registered sex offender accused of rape in Steuben County was arrested Friday, according to the sheriff’s department.

Cain J. Hillis, 26, of Angola was booked into the county jail on felony charges of sexual battery, criminal deviate conduct and rape.

The sheriff’s department started investigating the case after receiving a report Aug. 5. The sexual assault allegedly occurred July 27 at a home just outside Angola. The department did not release other details.

Hillis is registered as a sex offender in Steuben County because of an earlier, unrelated conviction in 2008 on a charge of sexual misconduct with a minor, according to authorities.

He was being held without bail until his initial court hearing Monday.
