Drowning suspected in death of swimmer in Whitley lake

A Fort Wayne man likely drowned over the weekend at Old Lake in Whitley County, according to Indiana conservation officers.

James M. Beck, 29, was swimming alone Saturday afternoon. He was away from shore, heading toward a raft, when he started struggling in the water.

His girlfriend, who was in a home by the lake, saw his struggle and immediately ran to the shore and swam to him.

Beck kept struggling, and she could not hold onto him without going underwater herself, so she briefly let go of him to grab the raft. When she turned around, he was underwater and out of sight.

About 2 p.m., emergency crews were sent to the home in the 7300 block of North County Road 350 West on Old Lake. Divers searching for Beck found his body at 8:45 p.m. in 20 feet of water. An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.
