Boilermakers’ rally falls short in Italy

Donnie Hale had 19 points and five rebounds for Purdue in an 82-79 loss to Lithuanian professional team Atletas Kaunas on Sunday in Montecatini, Italy.

Hale went 8 of 11 from the floor. Purdue shot 40.3 percent (29 for 72) to fall to 1-1 in its Italian tour.

Ronnie Johnson had 10 points, three assists and four steals. Terone Johnson had 10 points, three steals and three rebounds.

Anthony Johnson scored eight points. D.J. Byrd finished with seven points. Sandi Marcius had 14 rebounds.

Purdue trailed by nine points at halftime. The Boilermakers opened the third quarter with a 16-3 run. A dunk by Raphael Davis with 5:35 to go in the quarter gave Purdue its first lead since early in the game. Davis, from Fort Wayne, finished with three points and four rebounds.

The game was tied at 79 in the final seconds. Atletas made a three-pointer to take the lead. Byrd missed a three-point shot as time ran out.

Purdue faces Vicenza All-Star on Tuesday.
