About 9:45 p.m. Saturday a male, armed with a sawed-off shotgun entered the Dollar General store at 1101 S. Baldwin Ave. in Marion, state police said
The man demanded money from a store employee who was counting the day’s receipts, state police said. A second employee heard what was happening and called 911.
Marion police officers responded to the call and set up a perimeter around the store, state police said.
When officers entered the front of the store, the suspect fled out a back door and was confronted by waiting officers. The suspect allegedly pointed the shotgun and fired at least one round at officers. Two Marion police returned fire, striking the suspect numerous time, state police said.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene by Grant County Coroner Steven Dorsey. The suspect’s name has not been released pending notification of family and establishing his identity.
No police officers or store employees were injured.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending outcome of the investigation.
