Indianapolis teen dies after fall from 5th-floor balcony

INDIANAPOLIS — Police in Indianapolis say a teenager died after falling from a fifth-floor balcony while apparently trying to escape from officers breaking up a late-night party at an apartment building near the IUPUI campus.

Others at the party told police that 18-year-old Xavier Sommerville of Indianapolis lost his grip and fell as he was trying to swing down to a balcony below after officers arrived on a report of loud music about 3 a.m. Monday.

Police say that officers found Sommerville face down on the sidewalk and he was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later.

Officers cited five people at the apartment for illegal alcohol possession and a 22-year-old man for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
