Charges are pending against a man who Fort Wayne Police say fled from an officer in a stolen pickup and crashed into a utility pole.
The man, whose name has not been released, was in serious condition Friday. He wasn’t wearing a seat belt when the truck crashed and was ejected from the vehicle; the utility pole he crashed into then landed on his midsection, according to a police news release.
Shortly after 6 a.m., a maroon Chevy truck was reported stolen. The truck was found a few hours later in the parking lot just west of the Allen County Jail. At about 10:30 a.m. officers took the owner of the vehicle to retrieve it, but before they could get to it, the suspect allegedly left the jail and got into the truck.
According to the release, officers attempted to pull over the truck at Berry Street and Broadway. The truck continued westward onto Main Street. The driver lost control of the truck when he attempted to turn north onto Leesburg Road, according to the news release.
Emergency crews freed the driver at about 11:30 a.m., and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
