FORT WAYNE — A train derailment on Fort Wayne’s near-south side sent dozens of freight cars off the tracks Saturday morning, according to Norfolk Southern railroad.
No one was injured, and no hazardous material spilled in the derailment near South Anthony Boulevard and Hayden Street, railroad spokesman Dave Pidgeon said.
With two locomotives hauling 43 cars, the train slipped off the tracks in Fort Wayne about 7 a.m. All 43 cars were damaged, and 37 of them derailed, Pidgeon said.
Traffic on South Anthony Boulevard and Winter Street was blocked while the wreck was cleared. The two crossings were opened by about 4 p.m.
The derailment shut down Norfolk Southern’s main line until 2:30 p.m., Pidgeon said.
The track speed in that area is 10 mph, but Pidgeon did not know how fast the train was going. The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
The train was coming from Chicago and heading to Harrisburg, Pa. Pidgeon did not disclose what the train cars contained.
