Gunmen rob bank; 2nd in city this week

FORT WAYNE – Threatening tellers with a gun, bank robbers hit a bank on the city's southwest side Wednesday morning.

The Fort Wayne Police Department said a man wearing a cap and hooded sweatshirt went inside the First Federal Savings Bank at 5311 S. Bend Drive shortly about 9:08 a.m. and acted as though he were distracted by a document. Detectives believe that was a ruse to avoid having an image of his face captured by video surveillance.

The robber approached the counter, raised the hood on his sweatshirt and then brandished the firearm at the two tellers, the statement said. He was joined by a second robber and the two left with an undetermined amount of cash, the police department said in a statement.

The statement said the robbery, off West Jefferson Boulevard, happened right after the bank opened and no customers were inside.

This was the second time this week a Fort Wayne bank has been robbed:

"At this time, there is not sufficient information to determine if the two incidents are related, though detectives are not ruling out the possibility that they are," today's police statement said.

Fort Wayne has had eight bank robberies so far this year, and police said financial institutions are encouraged to periodically review security measures. Investigators ask that any suspicious activity be reported to police immediately.
