A reader who read last week's column on couponing called in with suggestions on how to avoid being overstocked at home. Basically, Pat Levy's advice is to share.

She asks for people at church to save coupons for her. When her pantry gets too full, she donates excess inventory to the food bank.

Levy and a friend recently went through her pantry checking expiration dates on food. Anything that was beyond the expiration date she tossed. Products that were near their expiration date were donated to a food pantry, and other items were marked with colored dots based on when they would expire.

She also offered a suggestion for people like me, who claim not to have enough time to coupon. Pick just five items you use regularly, Levy suggested, and then look for coupons for those specific items. Just doing that she predicted would save $60 a year.

Running apparel sales help Haiti, Kenya

Three Rivers Running Company, 4039 N. Clinton St., is now selling Janji performance running gear. Janji is a socially conscious running apparel company that donates a portion of sales to provide nutritional medicine to children in Haiti or water to families in Kenya.

Designs on apparel are based on the flags of Haiti and Kenya. Each piece of clothing or water bottle sold provides either eight packets of nutritional medicine or one season of water for a family.

“Since May, Three Rivers Running Company has provided 296 packets of nutritional medicine for malnourished children in Haiti and nine years of water for a family in Kenya,” according to a Janji news release.

To see the products, go to www.runjanji.com, or visit Three Rivers Running Company.

Cleaning sale

The Monogram Shoppe and more … is having a cleaning sale through Saturday. Retired Spartina bags are 50 percent off. Lots of items are $2, and notecards are $3. Also on sale: picture frames, pitchers, paperweights, totes, linen towels and cards. Sounds like a good time to stock up on hostess and thank-you gifts. The store is in Covington Plaza at 6410 W. Jefferson Blvd.
