The Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend issued a statement Friday morning to say it had contacted the Allen County Sheriff's Department regarding an investigation of its ex-head football coach days earlier than police have said.
A statement issued Thursday by the sheriff's department said it had opened an investigation into Matt Lindsay after being contacted by Bishop Luers High School on Tuesday. Lindsay was fired Sunday over inappropriate video clips of students and other people found on his computer the evening of Sept. 12 and placed on administrative leave the next day while an internal investigation was conducted, according to the diocese.
However, the diocesan statement said, "The Diocesan attorney did not wait six days to contact the Allen County Police Department.
"A message was left with the ACPD after the close of business hours on Friday September 14th; roughly 5:00-5:15PM.
"A subsequent face-to-face meeting with Allen County Police personnel occurred on Tuesday, September 18th."
Lindsay told The News-Sentinel on Sept. 13 that he was taking a leave of absence from the school for unspecified personal reasons. He was in his 26th season as the Luers coach.
