ROME CITY — A large fire has destroyed a building at a lumber company business in northeastern Indiana.

The fire was reported late Monday at the Frick Lumber Co. near the Noble County town of Rome City and burned for several hours into early Tuesday.

Jim Abbs of the Orange Township fire department told WANE-TV the building that caught fire was filled with lumber and a payloader was used to help get the blaze under control.

The building was fully engulfed by flames and its roof had collapsed by the time firefighters arrived at the business along U.S. 6 about 30 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. Crews were able to keep the fire from reaching other buildings and several nearby propane tanks.

In 2004, a fire destroyed the sawmill of the Noble County company, drawing the response of eight area fire departments and causing $6 million in damage, officials said for a story in The Journal Gazette that year.

The Journal Gazette contributed to this story.
