Fox News reports CIA in Libya was denied backup, told to 'stand down'

Sources on the ground recount Sept. 11 attack

Fox News is reporting today that it has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 that an urgent request for military backup made by the CIA annex during the attack on the U.S. consulate was denied.

The Fox News report quotes sources, including former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods, as saying the attack on the annex itself about a mile from the consulate several hours later also failed to get military aid and that CIA operators were twice told to “stand down” when shots were heard in Benghazi at 9:40 p.m. and the small team sought to give aid at the consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team were under attack.

According to Fox News, former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods was reportedly among those at the CIA annex when he and others heard the shots. Woods reportedly went up the chain of command at the annex to report the shooting and asked permission to go to the consulate to help. That’s when they were told to “stand down,” which was repeated shortly thereafter.

Woods and at least two others ignored those orders and went to the consulate, according to the Fox News report, which was on fire by then. Shots were exchanged. The rescue team from the CIA annex evacuated the survivors of the attack, but, according to the report, they said could not locate the ambassador, who was killed in the attack.

The Fox News sources said Woods was later joined at the scene by fellow former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, and that they were killed by a mortar shell nearly seven hours after the attack on the consulate began
