An Allen County government employee has been fired – by his father – after drinking, then driving a county vehicle to a north-side recycling center.

According to court records, Huntertown resident Benjamin Freck, 41, was approached by police at Hoosier Metal, 2222 W. Coliseum Blvd., Oct. 11 around 9:10 a.m. after he was noticed driving erratically. A search of the vehicle revealed one can of beer. Freck also carried several doses of the painkiller Vicodin, which he said had been legally prescribed.

After failing a field sobriety test, Freck was taken to the State Police Post, where a test revealed a blood-alcohol level of .20 percent, well above the legal limit of .08.

Freck worked in the county's buildings and grounds department managed by his father, Dan. Dan Freck said his son was recycling county scrap at the time but had been terminated as a result of last week's incident.
