A northeast Indiana woman died after a Wabash County crash in which she and her 15-year-old son were trapped inside their Jeep.

Indiana State Police said Emilio E. Santana, 26, of Macy, was driving south on County Road 600 West shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday when his 1996 Chevrolet Lumina failed to stop at the stop sign at Division Road.

The car collided with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee driven by Cara L. McCollister, 35, of Roann, state police said in a statement issued Monday.

The Jeep was struck on the driver’s side, causing it to go off the road, snap a utility pole in half, go airborne and then roll on its top, the statement said.

It said McCollister and her son were extricated and then flown to a hospital in Fort Wayne, where the woman died from her injuries.

The son had internal injuries, state police said. His condition Monday was not available, and state police have not publicly identified him.

Santana, who was not injured, has been charged with reckless homicide, state police said. His wife, a passenger in the car, was treated at an area hospital and released.
