Who knew that rockets filled with water and constructed using a pop bottle, cardboard tube, foam, a pingpong ball, masking tape and hot glue could fly higher than 120 feet in the air?

Fifth-graders from Indian Village Elementary learned it was indeed possible Tuesday afternoon when teachers launched their handmade rockets. Students counted down and their mouths dropped as they watched the rockets shoot into the air before landing seconds later.

The rockets were made during the during a STARBASE class, held at the Fort Wayne Air National Guard. STARBASE is a program sponsored by the Department of Defense to teach students about STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – fields in a hands-on learning environment.

“The goal is to get them interested in STEM at a young age,” said Scott Liebhauser, program director.

The program is working with eight schools, which bring classes of 30 students once a week for five weeks to learn about robotics, geometry, chemistry and rocketry. It focuses on low-income schools to give these students opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.
