Membership in a new league has brought with it a new – and more favorable – lease for the Komets.

The Allen County Memorial Coliseum Board on Wednesday approved a five-year deal that reflects some “pretty strong requests” made by owners of the hockey team, according to General Manager Randy Brown.

Under the previous deal, the Komets were required to pay the coliseum rent if season attendance did not reach 232,500. That threshold has now been lowered to 200,000, but the change is expected to be moot because the Komets have paid rent only once in the past 10 years, Brown said. The coliseum benefits from higher attendance through parking and concession revenues.

In addition, the coliseum will pay the Komets a $1.50 bonus per person on attendance over 220,500 and the Komets will pay the coliseum $10,000 for advertising on the ice instead of the previous $23,000.

The Komets moved from the Central Hockey League to the ECHL this year, and

owners argued that commitment should be reflected in the lease, Brown said.

The board Wednesday also approved three one-year basketball leases with IPFW and a new two-year deal with the Mad Ants basketball team. The new contracts included few changes, Brown said.
