FORT WAYNE — Seniors Bryson Scott from Northrop and V.J. Beachem from New Haven are officially in the fold for Purdue and Notre Dame, respectively. Two of the most highly rated players in northeast Indiana signed their letters of intent Wednesday during the early signing period for basketball.

The 6-foot-1 Scott, one half of the talented Scott twins – Brenton signed with Indiana State – is a four-star guard ranked No. 79 nationally by Rivals.

“Bryson gives us a lead guard,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “He’s going to play the point a lot. I think we’ll be able to play two point guards together with him. With his strength and his ability to break people down and play, his pull-up has really improved, his three has really improved.”

Bryson averaged 25.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists last season and was named a Junior All-Star and third-team All-State.

“He’s a very competitive guy and guys like that in our program have been very, very successful,” Painter said. “I embrace guys that are really competitive, and I like that part of him. He works on his game. He likes to play basketball. And you’d be surprised with how many guys you get that you sign and after two or three months you’re like ‘Man, I don’t know how much he likes basketball.’ I know we’re getting a guy who loves to play basketball in Bryson Scott.”

After two years at Harding, the 6-7 Beachem transferred to New Haven after Harding closed. Beachem, ranked No. 85 by Rivals, averaged 19.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.3 rebounds, earning Junior All-Star core-team status and first-team All-NHC honors.

“V.J. is a smooth, scoring wing who can really shoot the basketball and just knows how to play the game,” Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said on the school’s website. “He has a great feel on the court for what is going on around him. V.J. is an active and long defender.

“If I compared him to a former player who has come through our program recently, it would be Ryan Ayers. One thing that V.J. does very well is that he can put the ball on the floor. He needs to get stronger, but he has great length and plays above the rim. What I love most about him though is his calm demeanor on the court. ”

Both players also come into their programs with heralded recruiting classes.

Scott joins Lawrence North’s Basil Smotherman and Illinois St. Charles East’s Kendall Stephens.

“With these three guys we have positions we need and also it’s the right fit in terms of three people that have been at Purdue and give us a really good chance, not only because of their abilities as basketball players, but as people, their backgrounds and their families,” Painter said.

Beachem will enter Notre Dame along with Mishawaka Marian’s Demetrius Jackson, Penn’s Austin Torres and Philadelphia St. Joseph Prep’s Steve Vasturia.
