Smiling faces filled the community room at the Fort Wayne Housing Authority’s Brookmill Apartments on Tuesday night as members from the Boys & Girls Club of Fort Wayne and their families were served a free holiday meal.

Elaina Dunn, executive assistant and grant writer for the organization, said this is the fourth year for the dinner. On Monday night, children from the McCormick Club enjoyed a meal at the Greater Mount Ararat Baptist Church, who offered their space free of charge for the event. Tuesday night, the Boys & Girls Club of Brookmill had their meal in the apartment complex’s clubhouse. Between the two nights they expected to serve around 400 people.

Amy Jacobwitz of the Fort Wayne Housing Authority said Ceruti’s prepared and delivered the food, free of charge. Jacobwitz said it’s wonderful to be able to provide the 108 families living at Brookmill with a meal they couldn’t afford to prepare for themselves.

“Every year it just gets bigger and bigger; we are very excited about that.” Jacobwitz said.

“This has been a great collaboration,” said Joe Jordan, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club.

Jordan said he came up with the idea four years ago, and then got the Fort Wayne Housing Authority, Jane Avery at the Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana, Ceruti’s, Greater Mount Ararat Baptist Church, as well as Aunt Millie’s bakery, on board with the idea.

The long rows of tables were decorated with fall leaves, gourds and fruit, and the placemats were made last year as a project at the Boys and Girls Club. They were laminated drawings depicting what the children were thankful for having.

One had a crayon picture of a large tree on it. Scrawled in crayon block letters it read, “I’m thankful for trees.” Another read “I am thankful because I love my family.”

Judging by the happy faces on the adults and children they were all thankful for the good food and camaraderie the evening provided.
