LARWILL — Police officers used tear gas to force a possibly suicidal man from a northeastern Indiana home after a five-hour standoff.

The Whitley County Sheriff's Department says deputies went to the mobile home near the town of Larwill after a woman reported Monday receiving text messages from the man saying he was going to kill himself.

Police say that when deputies went inside the home, the 41-year-old man pointed a gun at them. WANE-TV reports that an Indiana State Police emergency response team was called to assist as officers surrounded the home.

Police say the man refused to come outside until tear gas was used about 9:30 p.m. He was taken to a hospital for observation and later jailed on a charge of pointing a loaded firearm.
