Car gunfire hits 2 homes on Lafayette

FORT WAYNE — Gunfire hit two houses Tuesday afternoon as one car chased another down Lafayette Street, near Senate Avenue, Fort Wayne police said.

A man who lives in one of the houses told police he was about to go outside when he heard three or four gunshots, said officer Jason Anthony, a police spokesman. One of the shots hit the corner of the man’s house on Lafayette but did not go inside.

The man then saw two cars – a maroon or red Chevrolet Impala with chrome rims and a dark-colored Mercury Grand Marquis – heading north on Lafayette. The Impala appeared to be chasing the Grand Marquis, he told police.

The man’s next-door neighbor, Irma Armstrong, was home with her pit bull, Missy, when a gunshot busted the glass of her storm door, went through her front door, flew across her front room and struck a door frame.

Armstrong, 53, told The Journal Gazette she heard the glass break but did not see where the shot came from.

Officers were sent to the neighborhood about 2:20 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Anthony said it’s not clear which car the shots came from or whether shots were fired from both cars. Police did not find the cars, and no arrests were made, he said.
