FORT WAYNE — Authorities have identified a 22-year-old man killed in a Friday night shooting that also left a second man critically injured.

Paul W. Ward III died at the scene, according to the Allen County coroner.

The second man’s name has not been released. He remained hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, said Sgt. Mark Brooks, a Fort Wayne police spokesman.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday, police were called to the 700 block of Milton Street, just east of South Hanna Street.

When officers arrived, a green Oldsmobile sedan, parked on Milton next to the curb, was overheating, police said. In the front seat, officers found Ward and the other man.

Police said it appeared both men had been shot recently while in the car. The car was towed to be combed for evidence.

Witnesses told police they saw a man leave the car’s back seat and flee on foot to the north. A description of that man was not released. On Saturday, Brooks said no arrests had been made.

Neighbors told The Journal Gazette they heard the car loudly revving before officers arrived. Police said firefighters came to help deal with the overheated engine.

Ward lived a few blocks from where the shooting occurred. His death was the 27th homicide in Allen County this year, the coroner’s office said.
