Compassion is more than government mandate

Mr. Sizemore’s efforts at the justification of socialism are well noted. His recent letter stated that veterans get a handout with the GI Bill and having their education paid for, and I have to agree with him on that.

Most people benefit from a handout in one form or another, for example tax deductions. However, I disagree that we should embrace this practice for anyone. It creates victims.

President Obama has created millions more of those since taking office in 2008, and this does not help the person or society. Many people, while having good intentions, don’t understand that the government cannot mandate compassion. Compassion is an individual choice to help and bless another person.

The problem with a helping hand is it too often becomes a way of life. There are people who deserve our compassion for circumstances beyond their control. But when someone finds themselves in a difficult situation because they made poor choices, it is not compassion to swoop in and take their free will away by providing everything for them but what they really need and that is learning from their mistakes.

True compassion teaches people to feed themselves, support themselves and utilize what they already have instead of giving them what they don’t have.
