Saving animals fine; what about babies?

How often do you see someone honored by having their story on the bottom half of the front page of a local newspaper? Well, how about both top and bottom?

Well, Lennox the cat made both top and bottom of several northeast Indiana newspapers. Congratulations, Lennox. It was a moving and tender article about Lennox being saved by the compassionate concern of two IU students from Angola after he had been abused and set loose in a wooded area in Bloomington. Lennox was saved and will live to enjoy a life of love, care and abundant provision.

We are proud of you, Lennox, for you have joined a select group of animals.

Do you remember, Beaky, featured on “Ocean Mysteries”? Somehow, Beaky rode the Gulf Stream some 4,000 miles to the coast of Wales in the United Kingdom. He was cared for by a local zoo until he could be flown back to Florida to be placed back on the warm, familiar sands of the Atlantic coast.

How many thousands of dollars and time and effort was spent saving Beaky? Who knows?

We save the cats, we save the turtles. We save the whales. They make front-page news. Wonderful! Compassionate! Commendable!

What about the babies? I have no idea how many cats, dogs, turtles, whales or other animals have been saved, but I know that thousands and thousands of babies have been lost since 1973.

Sorry. I’m at a loss on how to finish this letter. So much has been written and said since 1973, what does it matter what I say? I’ll leave it up to you. You finish the letter.

Put Christ back in Christmas again

Dec. 9 was the first day of Hanukkah, the Jewish celebration of the rededication of the Temple in 165 B.C.

The Jewish community is given or demands the honor of having their celebration addressed by its proper name, “Hanukkah.”

Dec. 25 is the day Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. Christ and the Christian community have been dishonored by this country’s merchant’s refusal to address Christmas properly, instead using “happy holidays or season’s greetings,” as they enjoy the “cha-ching” of their cash registers.

All four Gospels record Christ throwing the moneychangers out of the temple. It is past time for Christians to throw the moneychanger merchants out of our “Christian” celebration. Let’s put Christ back in Christmas.
